This module frames ethics as inseparable from ICH: communities are the source, custodians, and primary beneficiaries of living traditions. We connect ethics with identity, dignity, and mutual recognition, and examine ownership, IP rights, consent (FPIC), and the balance between preservation and commercialisation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Explain why ethics is co-natural to ICH safeguarding (identity, recognition, diversity).
  • Distinguish between ownership and custodianship in ICH contexts.
  • Apply Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) principles to ICH scenarios.
  • Evaluate the trade-offs between ICH preservation and global promotion.
