National Inventory of Active Intangible Cultural Heritage Elements – extract – Carpathian transhumance (English)
The paper presents Carpathian transhumance as a case study of Romania’s living pastoral traditions. Practiced since the Middle Ages, this seasonal movement of sheep shaped local economies, landscapes, and cultural expressions, from rituals to ecological knowledge. Today, it faces challenges from demographic decline, land fragmentation, and regulations, yet remains a marker of identity. The case study highlights both its vulnerability and the need for integrated safeguarding at national and European levels.
