On one hand, traditions need to remain authentic and rooted in community practices; on the other, they must adapt to contemporary realities to stay alive and relevant. This tension becomes particularly evident when cultural expressions enter the marketplace through tourism, media, or global promotion strategies.

Commercialization, if handled ethically, can provide opportunities for communities—by creating income, strengthening visibility, and supporting transmission to younger generations. However, it also comes with risks: dilution of authenticity, inequitable benefit-sharing, and loss of community agency. To navigate these challenges, communities, policymakers, and cultural practitioners must develop clear safeguards, fair governance mechanisms, and monitoring tools that protect both cultural integrity and practitioners’ rights.

Topics

Preservation–evolution trade-offs: safeguarding continuity while allowing traditions to adapt to modern needs.

Commercialization ethics: risks of dilution, inequitable benefits, and community disempowerment.

Global promotion strategies with local relevance: ensuring international visibility while respecting community voice.

Implementation toolkit: codes of conduct, FPIC (Free, Prior, Informed Consent) forms, KPIs (Key Performance Indicators), and governance pledges.

Key Questions

What are the early warning signs of commodification or environmental/cultural overload?

How do we design equitable benefit-sharing and capacity limits?

Which KPIs best measure authenticity, equity, and participation over time?

How can promotion be scaled globally without displacing community control?

Case Explorations

Case 1: Fado (Implementation)

Students build a Fado Safeguard Pack, including:

House rules for performances,

Filming and recording policy,

Audience and capacity limits,

Revenue-sharing schema,

Monitoring dashboard outline.

Case 2: Ceramics & Embroidery (Azores)

Analyze tourism experiences: Which sustain transmission (hands-on workshops, studio tours, maker markets)?
