Every living tradition is rooted in communities, shaped by their identity, dignity, and voice. When we speak about safeguarding ICH, we are not only preserving practices\u2014we are protecting people\u2019s rights, participation, and cultural agency. Without ethical principles, safeguarding risks becoming an exercise in control or exploitation rather than a pathway to cultural continuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Approaches<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ethics and Culture (Ethos)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The term&nbsp;<em>ethos<\/em>&nbsp;captures the moral foundations of culture. Ethics ensures that traditions are not reduced to commodities, but respected as part of a community\u2019s identity and dignity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UNESCO Ethical Principles<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Participation:<\/strong>&nbsp;communities must be active agents, not passive subjects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respect for identity and diversity:<\/strong>&nbsp;all traditions deserve recognition on their own terms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Non-exploitation:<\/strong>&nbsp;cultural expressions cannot be used in ways that harm, distort, or marginalize the communities that created them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ICH as Dynamic (Not \u201cFrozen\u201d)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditions are&nbsp;<strong>living, adaptive, and evolving<\/strong>.
