Digital Tools

Introduction

The promotion of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) increasingly relies on digital technologies and innovative media. Traditional promotion methods are still important, but the use of social media, immersive technologies, gamification, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) allows communities to reach wider audiences and engage younger generations. Choosing the appropriate digital tools depends on the promotion method and the preferred media channels of the target group.

Theory

Based on the choice of the promotion method, the corresponding media, traditional and/or social, will be used, based on the statistics showing which of these media are preferred by the target group. An example of ICH management is the advertorial, where an area and its ICH are promoted.

It is also proposed to use innovative interface technologies between the virtual and the physical, such as augmented, virtual, and mixed reality applications, which enhance people’s experience through mobile phones, but also online exhibitions (Briciu, Briciu & Kavoura, 2020).

Different tools can also be used to encourage the active participation of young people through digital platforms, such as:

Lego game series;

Online game platforms (H4GG, 2025; WKC Chronicles, 2025).

Employing modern technologies in the promotion of ICH can create the appropriate environment for the participation of new generations (university and high school students). Young people, being familiar with technological developments, find a space to express themselves, while at the same time coming into contact with traditions, learning about their past, and cultivating empathy.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another example of the use of digital technologies, which can offer many ways to promote and showcase local traditions, art, music, or other types of culture.

UNESCO recommends that Member States integrate AI systems, where appropriate, for the “preservation, enrichment, understanding, promotion, management and accessibility of tangible, documented and intangible cultural heritage, including endangered languages, as well as indigenous languages and knowledge” (Pinto, 2024).

Governmental or community actions can include up-to-date educational programs related to the application of AI systems in these areas in their promotional programs, ensuring a participatory approach targeting institutions, schools, and the general public.

AI systems offer opportunities and challenges in relation to ICH when addressing specific categories of users. For example:

For communities, AI can help by offering innovative programs that communicate their heritage to a wider audience. At the same time, communities should be aware of the risk of abuse, as they may adapt “myopic” community interests or explanations of intangible cultural heritage from one perspective, without hearing the multitude of opinions that may exist.

For general users, AI can make intangible cultural heritage more accessible and interesting, but there is a risk of misinformation.

Overall, education through AI can make ICH known to a wider audience, but there is always the potential for unethical use of data (UNESCO, 2024b).

Examples

Advertorial campaigns linking regional traditions to tourism.

VR exhibitions recreating craft-making or festive events.

Gamified heritage learning through Lego series and online platforms (H4GG, WKC Chronicles).

AI-powered projects that interpret oral histories or translate endangered languages.

Application

Task: Choose one local ICH element. Design a digital promotion strategy that uses at least one immersive technology (AR/VR), one gamified element, and one AI tool. Present how each tool would:

Attract new audiences;

Ensure community participation;

Avoid risks of misinformation or cultural distortion.

Reflection questions

Which digital technology (AR/VR, gamification, AI) is best suited to promoting ICH in your community?

How can communities ensure their voices are not distorted when heritage is digitized?

What ethical safeguards are needed when using AI to promote ICH?

Can digital platforms replace direct cultural participation, or should they only complement it?

VIDEOS- embedded

Training pack, Manual, Chapter 9, interview Achaia Greece.mp4

Files to Download –

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17510694.2024.2329823

CASE STUDY: Chapter 9

Periphery of Achaia, Greece

CASE STUDY: Chapter 6Extended Central Macedonia – Chalkidice, Greece

["post-1732","lesson","type-lesson","status-publish","hentry","module-marketing-and-methods-of-promoting-ich","post
["GET
